Kayak Island

Background
Kayaking in Åland
Exploring Åland by kayak offers a unique sense of freedom and a deep connection with the island’s stunning archipelago nature. In a kayak, you glide silently across the water, coming close to seabirds, smooth rocks, and the tranquil rhythm of the sea.
For beginners, shorter routes through sheltered bays and the inner archipelago are ideal. More experienced paddlers can venture into the outer archipelago and open sea, where the scenery becomes more dramatic and the adventure more demanding.
Popular Kayak Routes and Areas
Two of Åland’s most beloved kayaking regions are northern Åland and the Föglö archipelago. A classic route starts in Eckerö, loops around Geta in the north, continues south through Bomarsund in Sund, and finishes in Mariehamn—or for the ambitious, all the way back to Eckerö. Along the way, you’ll experience a mix of open sea, dramatic red granite cliffs, and the calm waters of the southern archipelago.
The Föglö region is also popular, known for its maze of small islands and protected waters—perfect for beginner-friendly paddling or when winds are stronger. For seasoned paddlers, more advanced routes like the “Northern Sea Route” (from Käringsund in the west to Jurmo in the east) offer a rewarding challenge beyond marked trails.
